Stay Humorous and Light-hearted

Sometimes when I am doing QT session for a client/ friend, unexpected reactions or situations pop up. In such moments, it is useful to keep your sense of humour and stay light hearted.

Let me share an example of a recent experience which could have turned embarassing but didn't.

I was having drinks with a friend when he shared that he often has severe back aches and in fact was feeling lousy then. Naturally, I offered to QT him there and then. I asked him to stand in front of me facing the table while I QT his back. I was on a high stool so very comfortable and convenient position (remember, as therapists our positions must be comfortable too!! Please do not forget this important point!!!).

He's new to QT and so I was explaining to him how it works etc. After QTing him for about 10 mins, he went "oops". I was concerned and immediately checked if he's ok. He says he's feeling a funny sensation, he was (the alcohol must have given him courage or loosen his tongue. LOL) having an erection.

Now, what would your reaction be? You can choose to go "phweeeh", "oh", "be embarassed" or...

For me, felt neither of those emotions cos' an erection is a normal bodily occurrence. Besides, I know he wasn't trying to be funny, neither did he mean it in a lewd way. So I smiled and continued to QT him. When he saw that I was totally comfortable, he smiled and let it be as well. No awkwardness at all.

Having said that, please dear ladies, when you are QTing a man and a complete stranger at that, do create a safe environment for yourself. If I am at his home, I always ensure that another family member is around and I leave the "treatment room's" door open. Or do it at the TV area.If you are a male therapist, I am sure you know this also applies to you too!
